Executive Functioning Support

Knowing what you need to do and actually doing it are two very different things.
For many young people, the challenge isn't ability — it's getting started, staying on track, and managing everything that life throws at them.
That's where our occupational therapists come in.

What we can support

Executive functioning is the set of mental skills that help us plan, organise, start tasks, manage time, and adapt when things don't go to plan. For young people with ADHD, autism, or anxiety, these skills can be genuinely harder to develop — not because of a lack of effort or intelligence, but because of how their brain processes and manages information. OT works on building these skills in a practical, real-world way.

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 15-25

Who is this for?

  • Young people with ADHD, autism, or anxiety that affects planning and organisation
  • Those who regularly miss deadlines, lose things, or forget responsibilities even when they’re trying
  • Young people who find it hard to start tasks — not because they don’t care, but because getting going feels impossible
  • Parents supporting a teenager who seems capable but is constantly overwhelmed or behind
  • Anyone approaching a big transition such as finishing school, starting uni, or moving into work
  • NDIS participants with daily living, study, or work readiness goals

Executive functioning challenges look very different from person to person — and they’re not about intelligence or effort. If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth a conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

My teenager is bright — why do they struggle so much with basic organisation?

Executive functioning is completely separate from intelligence. Many highly capable young people have significant difficulties with planning, starting tasks, and following through — particularly those with ADHD or autism. OT addresses the specific skills that aren't yet working reliably, without making assumptions about what a young person should be able to do.

It depends!

Occupational therapy is not designed to last forever - our jobs are to hone your skills and prepare you to take on life, with confidence and the capabilities to do so independently. For some, as few as 5 sessions can target a specific skills and bring you up to speed but some also benefit from more regular sessions over a 6 - 12 month period. It's completely depends on what your goals are.

Because an OT doesn't just hand you a tool — they work with your young person to figure out why existing strategies haven't stuck, and build an approach from there. Sometimes it's the wrong tool. Sometimes it's about understanding what's actually getting in the way at a neurological level, and working with that rather than against it.

Everyday life skills support is typically funded under Capacity Building — Daily Activities (Support Category 7). We are a registered NDIS provider. Get in touch and we can help you understand how your plan could fund this support.
